Rio Linda Bicycle Accident Injures Juvenile at Intersection

I’m Ed Smith, a Rio Linda bicycle accident lawyer. A Rio Linda juvenile riding a bicycle was injured on October 3 after being involved in a collision with a motor vehicle. Authorities are conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash.

What Happened

The accident occurred where West E Street intersects with West 16th Street shortly after 3:30 in the afternoon when the driver of a Taurus collided with the bicyclist. According to a report by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the bicycle rider suffered injuries to the legs and hands and was subsequently taken to a medical center in Roseville for treatment.

Bicycle Accidents in Sacramento

In 2014, the most recent year for statistics on bicycle accidents by the California Office of Traffic Safety, there were 213 bicycle riders either injured or killed within the city limits of Sacramento. Thirty of those persons were 15 years old or younger. Across Sacramento County, there were a total of 579 bicyclists who were killed or injured in collisions with motor vehicles with 76 who were 15 or younger. This placed Sacramento County as number three out of the 58 counties in the state.

Tips for Bicycle Safety

Biking is a great way to get around and to exercise. However, riders can experience catastrophic injuries when riding, particularly when other traffic is present. There are a few things bicyclists must keep in mind;

  • Do a spot check on your bike before starting out, making sure tires are properly inflated and that your hand brakes work.
  • Adjust the seat. The seat should be level, however, it may be tilted up or down by no more than 3 degrees according to your preference. The height of the seat is important too.
  • Make sure your helmet fits properly and meets the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission standards.
  • Wear neon or brightly colored clothing, or use reflective tape or neon strips.
  • Never take your hands off the handlebars. Use a backpack or a carrier fitted on your bike.
  • If you are riding at night or at dusk in California, make sure your lights are on. You are required to have a light in the front and a red reflector in the back. Yellow reflectors should be on the pedals or on your shoes and yellow or white reflectors on the front tires and red or white on the back.
  • Do not ride on freeways or highways unless it is expressly permitted. Otherwise it is against the law. Bicyclists are also not allowed on toll bridges unless permission is granted by Caltrans.
  • Ride in the bike lane unless the road lacks one. In this case, ride with traffic in the right lane unless turning left.
  • Stay far enough away from parked cars if possible to avoid being hit by a driver exiting his or her vehicle.

Riding on the Sidewalk

The decision to allow sidewalk riding is up to the city or towns in the state. There is no law on the books that prohibits it statewide. In many areas, local laws allow children under a certain age to ride on the sidewalks, and organizations such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration argue that children under 10 are safer riding on the sidewalk.
