Memorial Service
Members of the Chinese of Indochina Friendship Association gathered Sunday, September 13, 2015, to remember a young man who was studying hard to make a better life for himself and his immigrant community.
Gang Violence
On August 31, 2015, a stray bullet from a gang member fight pierced through the wall of an apartment complex in the Lemon Hill area.
Fatally Wounded
Zai Chao Wu, 18, was playing a video game in his bedroom and was struck by the stray bullet. He was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his gun shot wound the following day.
Living the American Dream
Wu and his family came to the United States in 2002 for a better life. Wu’s parents describe their son as a talented artist and musician. They said he was a good student and had received a scholarship to attend Sacramento City College.
Teaching English to those in his community
Wu was studying to become an English teacher. It was his desire to bridge the language barrier between his immigrant community and English speaking America.
A Proper Chinese Memorial Service
The community came together and had a fund-raiser at their temple to raise more than $20,000 in one day. The money was gifted to the Wu family to perform a proper Chinese Memorial service for their beloved son. The family is very grateful and overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support. They are getting through a very tough time with the help and support they received from friends and members of the Chinese of Indochina Friendship Association.
