Redding Woman Fatally Injured During Oregon Car Accident

On Sunday, November 8, 2020, a woman from Redding, California, tragically passed away after being involved in an Oregon car accident. The woman has been identified by Oregon authorities as 63-year-old Cheryl Frank. According to details from the Oregon State Police (OSP), the crash involved multiple vehicles and happened in the morning on an icy road. In addition to Frank, several other people suffered injuries as a result of the incident.

Crash Details

OSP Captain Tim Fox stated that the crash occurred at about 9:40 a.m. on Highway 97 north of the small city of Crescent in northern Klamath County. According to Fox, a Washington man was driving north on the highway in a pickup truck when his vehicle lost traction while traveling over a patch of ice. After losing traction, the truck slid over the highway median and entered southbound traffic lanes, eventually crashing into a second pickup truck driven by a man from Redding.

According to reports, a third vehicle, identified as an SUV, was also involved in the crash. However, police did not provide reports about how the SUV became involved. Reportedly, occupants of this vehicle were uninjured.

Response

OSP, as well as the Oregon Department of Transportation and Crescent Rural Fire Department, assisted with accident response. OSP reports that responding officials found that the Washington State driver and all three passengers of his vehicle had been seriously injured. All four individuals were transported to hospitals via ambulance.

Frank and the driver of the second pickup were also discovered with major injuries and were hospitalized. Tragically, Frank lost her life while in hospital custody. Updates on the conditions of the five other individuals have not yet been provided.

Investigation

Fox stated that OSP believes that weather and roadway conditions were factors in this accident. However, a full accident investigation is still underway and accidents often involve multiple causes, even those caused by non-driver factors.

Hazardous Roads and Government Liability

Governments are expected to make sure that their roads are reasonably safe. In cases where unsafe road conditions cause accidents, the government responsible for that road may be considered an at-fault party to the collision. When this happens, the government body in question can often be held financially responsible by people who have suffered damages as a result of the crash.

However, filing a wrongful death claim against a government entity can be very complicated. Critically, these cases usually need to be filed during a very short window of time following the crash, giving the government an advantage over families seeking compensation. Because these cases are complex, it’s vital to have an expert attorney on your side as soon as possible.
