Redding Skateboarder Hurt in Auto Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Redding personal injury lawyer. A local skateboarder was injured during a car crash that occurred in Redding on Sunday, June 3, 2018. Officers from the Redding Police Department (RPD) responded to the accident. RPD reported that the crash happened in the evening and involved only one vehicle. RPD identified the injured skateboarder as Michael Janda, a 15-year-old boy from Redding. Medical officials at the scene of the crash reported that the boy suffered severe injuries when he was struck by the car. This accident is still under investigation by RPD as they try to determine what factors may have caused it to happen.

Crash Information

RPD officers reported that they first learned about the accident when they received a call at about 5:10 p.m. The caller reported that a skateboarder had been hit by a vehicle at the intersection of Continental Street and Placer Road and had suffered serious injuries.

In a report issued after the accident response, RPD stated that Janda had been riding his skateboard eastbound on Placer Road and approaching the Continental Street intersection while traveling very quickly down a steep hill. Officers said that a 30-year-old woman from Redding had been driving northbound on Continental Street in a Pontiac Grand Am. Janda collided with the Pontiac as he was traveling through the intersection. The collision caused Janda to be thrown from his skateboard and onto the road.

Injuries

Medics at the scene of the crash reported that Janda had not been wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. The boy was immediately taken to a local hospital by ambulance so that he could be given emergency medical care. The driver of the Pontiac, who had been wearing a seatbelt when the crash took place, was not reported to have suffered any injuries.

Investigation

Police closed the intersection for about an hour while emergency response and investigation took place. Although RPD is still investigating factors that may have caused this accident, officers have said that intoxication by drugs and/or alcohol is not suspected to have been a factor.

Traumatic Brain Injuries

When skateboarders or cyclists are hit by a vehicle, they are at-risk of suffering a traumatic brain injury (TBI). TBIs are complicated, and often severe injuries that have a variety of symptoms. Many of the symptoms of a TBI can mean permanent changes in a survivor’s day-to-day life. These changes can be challenging to deal with emotionally but can also come with a heavy financial burden. However, if you have received a TBI or any serious injury as the result of an accident, an experienced personal injury lawyer may be able to help you claim repayments for your losses.
