Redding Man Fatally Injured in Auto Accident Involving Boat Trailer

Local man sadly passed away after being injured during an auto accident that occurred on Highway 273 on Wednesday, June 17, 2020. Shasta Sheriff’s Department authorities have since identified the decedent as Murray Ronald Roseberry, a 61-year-old resident of Redding. Roseberry had been a pedestrian in a collision involving a pontoon boat being towed on a trailer by an SUV.

Crash Information

The accident occurred shortly before 11:00 p.m. on Highway 273 close to Breslauer Way on the southern end of Redding.  According to reports from California Highway Patrol (CHP), the SUV driver stated that he had been driving southbound on the highway when he noticed a pedestrian near the fog line on the edge of the road. The driver said he swerved his vehicle to avoid the pedestrian, but the trailer swung wide and struck Roseberry as a result.

Response and Arrest

Police reaching the crash scene found that Roseberry was critically injured during the crash. Tragically, he lost his life on-scene. Police indicated that the SUV driver, identified as a 63-year-old man, was placed under arrest on charges of driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter and subsequently booked into the Shasta County jail. Additionally, Highway 273 was closed to traffic while respondents worked at the scene and police investigated collision evidence. The highway was reportedly fully reopened by 3:30 a.m.
