Top Outdoor Activities in Plumas Lake, CA

Plumas Lake, California, is a small town in Yuba County surrounded by peaceful nature and stunning mountains. Located in the heart of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, about 30 miles north of Sacramento, Plumas Lake offers its residents the great outdoors. Below are some of the best outdoor activities in or near Plumas Lake.

Plumas-Eureka State Park

The Plumas-Eureka State Park is a well-preserved recreational area in a stunning high Sierra mountain setting. Established in 1959, the park provides visitors a fascinating look at California’s logging and lumber history. The main point of interest is the museum, originally built as the miner’s bunkhouse.

The museum now serves as a visitor center and features exhibits depicting the cultural and natural history of the state park. Across from the museum is the historic mining area. The Bushman five-stamp mill, Mohawk Stamp Mill, mine office, stable, the blacksmith shop, and the Moriarity House depict life in California’s gold rush era.

Visitors can enjoy hiking, fishing, and nature studying within the park. Some wildlife you can encounter include black bears, weasels, deer, minks, mountain lions, bobcats, martens, foxes, and more.

Western Pacific Railroad Museum

Another historical museum worth visiting is the Western Pacific Railroad Museum. The museum was established in 1903 to pass through the Sierra Nevada mountains through Portola, CA.

The main attraction of the museum is the historic locomotives and rolling stock. Several of their locomotives are in working condition, and by appointment, you can get lessons and operate them on the museum premises.

All the volunteers at the railroad museum are mechanics, engineers, and otherwise knowledgeable people who really know their stuff.

Lakes Basin

Lakes Basin is one of the most beautiful places in Northern California. The crystal blue waters and majestic mountains make this place a must-see. Located in the northernmost strip of the Sierra, the lake is an outdoor hideaway corner of Plumas National Forest.

This beautiful stretch of the forest offers abundant recreational activities for everyone. Whether it is boating, swimming, hiking, biking, horseback riding, or just sitting by the lake, this is the perfect vacation spot to do it all.

Along the trails, there are a ton of wildflowers, lakes, creeks, and waterfalls. This area is a haven for outdoor adventurists.
