Rancho Murrieta Double Fatality Crash
A tragic head-on crash claimed the lives of both drivers and injured three others last night near Rancho Murieta.
Two of those injured were young children. The third person injured was a 30-year-old woman.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said the fiery crash happened at about 9:30 pm on Highway 16 at Van Vleck Ranch. Two cars, one of which was pulling a trailer, collided head-on with one another. One of the vehicle’s caught fire and exploded. Jackson Road had to be closed in both directions.
Burning Wreckage
We have learned that two minor children in one of the cars were rescued by witnesses to the accident. These individuals heroically pulled the terrified children from the burning wreckage. A window of the burning vehicle had to be smashed in, in order to pull the children out. The 30-year-old woman was able to get out on her own.
Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District was called to the scene to put out a grass fire caused by this accident. A grassy area near the roadway caught fire after one of the vehicles became engulfed with flames.
Wrong Way Driver?
Preliminary information reported by the CHP indicates a wrong-way driver may be to blame for this Rancho Murrieta double fatality crash.
Apparently, a 44-year-old man was driving a Ford Fusion westbound in the eastbound lane of travel. His vehicle crashed head-on into the driver of a Chevrolet Suburban which was towing a trailer with a car on top of it.
Minor Injuries for Passengers
The woman and two children who escaped death were taken to UC Med Center with minimal injuries.
