Pursuit Crash Kills Driver
I’m Ed Smith, a Folsom personal injury attorney. A regular patrol for a Sacramento county deputy turned into a hot pursuit, after he attempted to pull over a vehicle with a license plate that came back as stolen. The driver of this vehicle hit the gas and took off away from the the deputies.
What Happened?
A female driver was behind the wheel of a black Honda Civic traveling along Darwin Street in the area of Arden Arcade. A Sacramento deputy who was behind the vehicle, ran a license plate check. When the license plate results came back as stolen, the deputy attempted to pull over the woman. Instead of the woman pulling over to the side of the road, she immediately accelerated in an attempt to lose the officer.
Officers Lay Spike Strip
According to a Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department spokesman, Sergeant Tony Turnbull, the pursuit continued until the woman reached Madison Avenue. This was where the woman traveling eastbound on Madison Avenue reached speeds of 100 miles per hour. Officers that were located ahead of the pursuit placed a spike strip in the path of the woman in the stolen vehicle. The woman ran over the spike strip which caused puncture damage to one tire.
Pursuit Driver Crashes
The woman continued to flee authorites with her flat tire along Madison Avenue and into the older part of Folsom; Where attempting to make a turn over the Rainbow bridge, she lost control of her vehicle. Sending her vehicle crashing into the Maribou hair salon located at 702 Sutter Street in Folsom. The woman was pronounced deceased at the scene due to the impact of the collision.
It is unclear to deputies as to why the woman fled from a traffic stop for a stolen license plate. Investigators from the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department will look into the case and determine whether there were any other factors for her failure to pull over. The Folsom Police Department will be responsible for investigating the crash. The identity of the woman has not been released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
