Avoiding a TBI in an Accident

Over the past few decades, we have learned more about the diagnosis and treatment of neurological trauma; however, this continues to persist as an expensive drain on our healthcare system and has the potential to devastate families. Therefore, it is important to try and prevent these serious injuries from occurring in the first place.

How does a Traumatic Brain Injury Occur?

One of the hardest parts of dealing with a traumatic brain injury is that they can occur in any number of ways. There has been a significant amount of attention paid to concussion and sports along with the challenges related to diagnosing these head injuries. Some people sustain these traumatic injuries in an auto accident. Even a simple injury such as a slip and fall can lead to brain damage. Because of the wide variety of mechanisms that can lead to these traumatic brain injuries, it can be a challenge to diagnose them quickly and accurately. For this reason, prevention is of vital importance.

Prevention is the Key

It is important to try and prevent head injuries from occurring so that individuals do not develop any dangerous symptoms of head trauma. These injuries are especially common in elderly patients who could have trouble maintaining their balance. Ensuring guardrails are present is vital along with making sure that rooms are well-lit. In children, it is important to ensure that they have the proper protective equipment whenever they take the field sports, particularly if they are playing football. When people are behind the wheel of a car, they should try to maintain a good awareness of their surroundings. Most importantly, they should not drive if they feel tired or if they have been drinking.

Importance of Immediate Medical Evaluation

If prevention fails and someone does develop signs of a traumatic brain injury, it is important to have them evaluated by a trained medical professional as quickly as possible. The consequences of these injuries can be devastating and could leave long-term effects on not only the individual but also their family. These could include loss of important motor function, changes in personality, but also severe pain. Therefore, seek medical care as quickly as possible.
