Plane Wreckage Found Near Antioch

Earlier this month, a small plane and pilot were reported missing after departing Buchanan Field in Concord, CA. The plane had crashed on a Sunday evening into Broad Slough, just north of Antioch. It was approximately 5:30 p.m. when a boater at the Antioch Marina witnessed the plane hurtling down towards the northern end of Broad Slough, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office. Using sonar as well as remotely operated vehicles to navigate through the Delta waters, emergency crews were able to locate the plane wreckage on Monday.

Emergency Response

Response crews including the Solano County Sheriff’s Office, Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, California Highway Patrol, U.S. Coast Guard, and Pittsburg Police Department all responded to the incident. On Sunday, response crews had found a backpack, flight charts, and a portion of a tail from a Piper Cherokee PA28. However, it wasn’t until the following day when the exact location of the plane and the missing pilot had been determined.

The Plane

The Piper Cherokee single-engine plane was registered under the Federal Aviation Administration. The aircraft wreckage was discovered around 10:30 a.m. the next morning, according to Sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Lee. The county sheriff’s dive team was called to the scene of the airplane accident and assisted with recovery operations. With the additional help of a salvage company, the aircraft wreckage was fully removed from the Delta waters within a few days.

The Pilot

The pilot of the Piper Cherokee has been identified as 22-year-old Colin Um from Berkeley, CA. He was the sole occupant inside the plane at the time of the fatal accident. His body was found in 20 feet of water on Monday. The National Transportation Safety Board is still investigating the origin of the crash.
