Pedestrian Suffered Major Injuries in North Sacramento Hit-and-Run

A pedestrian suffered major injuries in North Sacramento after being struck by a vehicle early Tuesday morning, July 8, 2025, at the intersection of Whitney Avenue and Watt Avenue. The crash occurred shortly after midnight and prompted a swift emergency response from the Sacramento Fire Department and the California Highway Patrol’s North Sacramento division.

Initial reports indicate that a single vehicle struck the male pedestrian and fled the scene, continuing northbound on Watt Avenue toward Auburn Boulevard. Emergency responders provided immediate care before transporting the victim to Mercy San Juan Medical Center for further treatment.

CHP initially classified the incident as a hit-and-run with injuries and later updated it to a major injury traffic collision. Authorities are actively reviewing surveillance footage and collecting witness statements to help identify the vehicle and driver involved. No other injuries were reported, and further details about the suspect vehicle have yet to be released.

Staying Safe as a Pedestrian: Nighttime and Intersection Precautions

Pedestrian crashes, especially at night, are often severe due to low visibility and increased driver inattention. Intersections like Watt and Whitney are especially dangerous due to higher traffic volumes and limited reaction time. Pedestrians should use crosswalks when available, wear reflective clothing at night, and stay alert for approaching vehicles, even when they have the right-of-way.

For drivers, exercising caution in poorly lit areas, slowing down near intersections, and remaining distraction-free are essential to prevent devastating accidents. Leaving the scene of a crash not only compounds the harm but is also a serious criminal offense under California law.
