Pedestrian Hit in Fatal Redding Highway Accident

One person passed away after being injured in a fatal Redding highway accident that took place on Monday, May 18, 2020. Reports issued by the Redding Police Department (RPD) indicated that the accident happened at night on Highway 273. Shasta County Sheriff’s Department authorities have not yet released the identity of the fatally injured woman pending her family’s notification.

Crash Details

The accident occurred at around 10:00 p.m. on the northbound side of Highway 273 near the exit for Buenaventura Boulevard. RDP reported that the woman was walking across the highway heading east while a 25-year-old woman was driving north on 273 in the same area. Reportedly, the northbound driver noticed the pedestrian and attempted to stop, but was not able to avoid a collision and struck the pedestrian head-on.

Response

Responders dispatched to the accident scene discovered the pedestrian with fatal trauma. Tragically, the woman was pronounced deceased on-site. The driver of the vehicle was reportedly not injured and remained at the accident scene to cooperate with investigating officers.

Investigation

RPD has indicated that they are currently investigating this crash and are keeping the involved vehicle impounded at this time. While no suspected factors have been reported, RPD has stated that they believe the involved driver was not impaired by intoxicating substances at the time of the crash.

Accident witnesses or anyone with salient information about the accident has been asked to contact RPD traffic specialist and investigating officer Dennis Mack by calling (530) 225-4200.

It can be difficult for police to investigate fatal pedestrian accidents because the decedent is usually unable to offer investigators testimony about the accident. Because decedents are unable to tell their side of the story, it is possible that police will not fully understand what factors caused the accident. For this reason, it is important to work with a Redding wrongful death lawyer with experience investigating fatal accidents privately.

A Dangerous Road

RPD has reported that Highway 273 sees an abnormally high number of accidents when compared with other locations throughout the city and encouraged all roadway users to practice caution in this area.

There are many reasons that a particular stretch of road may be dangerous. Often, areas of the road have a high rate of serious accidents because of issues with the pavement or poor roadway design. In these cases, the government body responsible for maintaining the road may be liable for accident damages. However, it is important to know that wrongful death cases against governments need to be filed within 180 days of the date of the accident, a dramatically shorter time-frame than with non-government cases.

Furthermore, cases involving government liability can be complex and having a skilled lawyer on your side is an important part of making sure your family receives fair compensation.
