Pedestrian Injured in Hit-and-Run Accident Near Downtown Modesto

I’m Ed Smith, a Modesto car accident lawyer. A pedestrian was walking in downtown Modesto on the morning of Tuesday, October 24, 2017. The pedestrian was walking in a crosswalk when they were struck by an oncoming vehicle. The driver of that vehicle left the scene following the collision. Sadly, the pedestrian had to be hospitalized for the injuries they suffered as a result of the incident.

We send our best wishes for a swift and full recovery to the pedestrian injured in this tragedy.

What Happened?

A female motorist of a silver SUV was exiting out of a grocery store parking lot located along 18th Street and H Street at approximately 8:30 am. At the same time, a pedestrian was walking in a crosswalk towards the shopping center. The woman was attempting to make a left-hand turn onto H Street when her vehicle struck the pedestrian. The impact of the collision propelled the pedestrian into the air and. The woman initially pulled over and glanced over the injured pedestrian laying on the ground. The woman allegedly got into her vehicle and drove away from the scene, leaving the pedestrian to suffer from their injuries.

Was the Pedestrian Injured?

The pedestrian appeared to have suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The pedestrian was taken to an area hospital for injury treatment.

Pedestrian Accident Investigation

The Modesto Police Department has not yet released a cause of the pedestrian accident due to an ongoing investigation. The husband of the driver arrived at the scene to provide investigators with a statement. The husband indicated that his wife allegedly panicked and left the scene. Police went to the home of the couple to interview the suspect driver. Immediate information was not available on what offenses the woman may be charged with.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

A 2015 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicated that approximately 129,000 pedestrians were hospitalized for injuries caused by pedestrian accidents. Additionally, 5,376 pedestrians fatalities resulted from such accidents. A 2015 Modesto Accident Statistic Report concluded that 94 out of 1,071 accidents involved pedestrians. It is important to note that pedestrians have no form of protection against a motor vehicle. When a driver is involved in an accident with a pedestrian, they are obligated to remain at the scene until officials or emergency personnel arrive to assess the situation. If a motorist fails to do so, they can evidently face civil penalties. For more information, contact a seasoned Modesto car accident lawyer.
