Pedestrian Identified After Fatal Vallejo Accident

The Solano County Sheriff’s Department released the identity of an individual who lost their life during a pedestrian auto accident that took place in Vallejo on Sunday, June 9, 2019. The man was identified as 65-year-old Rodeo resident Charles Edwards. According to police reports, Edwards had been a pedestrian walking on a local highway when the fatal accident occurred. My condolences are extended to the family and friends of Mr. Edwards after they have suffered such a tragic loss.

Accident Information

The collision took place at about 3:10 p.m. Officers of California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that Edwards had been walking along Highway Interstate 80 when he entered traffic lanes a short distance to the east of the Interstate Highway 780 junction near Benicia road. According to reports, a 23-year-old Sacramento man driving on Highway 80 collided with Edwards in the eastbound lane. The Sacramento man reportedly stopped at the accident scene and cooperated with responders.

When emergency officials arrived at the location of the crash, they discovered Edwards had suffered severe injuries. Tragically, he could not be helped by medics and was declared deceased at 3:14 p.m. at the scene of the accident.

Investigation

CHP is still investigating possible causes of this collision. While the investigation is ongoing, police have stated that they do not suspect that drugs nor alcohol were factors in the accident. CHP has asked for public assistance with investigating what may have caused this terrible accident. Accident witnesses or anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to call (707) 428-2100.

Pedestrian Accidents

Pedestrian accidents are very dangerous and often leave people with serious or fatal injuries. According to information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 6,000 people lose their lives in U.S. pedestrian accidents every year. In Vallejo alone, there were 42 pedestrian accidents between 2007 and 2018, leaving 6 people with fatal trauma and injuring 47 more.

These accidents are especially dangerous because pedestrians don’t have any protection from the impact of a crash. Because of this, pedestrian collisions can be serious even at low speeds. Many pedestrian accidents are caused by hazardous roads, distracted drivers, poor lighting, and other hazards.
