Pedestrian Accident Kills Woman Near Modesto

A pedestrian accident occurred on December 5 at the intersection of Pelandale Avenue and Chapman Road in Modesto. A woman was walking across the street when she was hit by an oncoming vehicle. The driver of that car reportedly fled the scene following the incident, leaving the walker behind to succumb to her injuries. Officials have identified the victim as 60-year-old Irene Arellano of Modesto.

My thoughts and prayers are with those mourning the loss of their loved one during this difficult time.

Accident Investigation

According to the Modesto Police Department, the driver involved in the hit and run accident remains at large. The suspect vehicle has been described as a 2006-2008 Volkswagen Jetta with front-end damage and possibly some rear-end damage from a prior accident. Those with information about the incident are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at (209) 521-4636 to help bring closure for the victim’s family.

Loved One Forever Remembered

Irene Arellano was a beloved friend and member of her family. She will be forever remembered by those she surrounded for her caring and loving soul. A GoFundMe page has been established by her loved ones to help bring her to her final resting place.

Pedestrian Accidents and Wrongful Death

A wrongful death occurs when a person passes away due to the wrongful, reckless, or negligent act of another. For instance, some examples of driver negligence in a pedestrian accident fatality include drunk driving, speeding, distracted driving and more. A wrongful death claim may be filed by the decedent’s family or dependents to recover resultant losses. As with any case of wrongful death, negligence must be proven on the part of the responsible party to claim these damages.

What Damages Can Be Recovered in a Wrongful Death Claim?

A death in the family can leave survivors with emotional and financial hardships. Some of the damages that may be recovered in a wrongful death claim include:

  • End-of-life medical care required to treat the decedent’s final illness or accident injury
  • Expenses for a loved one’s funeral and burial
  • Loss of assistance, care, protection and services suffered by the surviving family members of the deceased
  • Loss of consortium
  • Lost future income and support provided by a loved one
