Oroville Man Placed Under Arrest After Deadly Hit-and-Run

On Sunday, December 20, 2020, an Oroville man was placed under arrest following a deadly hit-and-run collision. According to the Oroville Police Department (OPD), the crash happened in the morning and left one pedestrian fatally injured. The decedent has since been identified as Justin Neva, a 57-year-old resident of the small town of Berry Creek. No other individuals were injured during the incident, and the accident remains under investigation.

Crash Information

The crash happened at about 9:00 a.m., close to the intersection of Fogg and Nelson Avenues. According to OPD, Neva was standing next to his parked car on Nelson Avenue in Oroville when a passing vehicle veered onto the roadway shoulder. The oncoming car struck Neva’s vehicle and trailer which were pushed into Neva, throwing him to the ground.

Police were alerted to the incident by a caller who reported that they had seen a man running away from the crash scene on foot. When emergency response officials arrived at the accident scene, the driver had left. Paramedics at the scene found Neva lying on the sidewalk with critical injuries and, sadly, pronounced him deceased on-site.

Oroville Man Arrested

Officers were able to identify the driver as a 30-year-old resident of Oroville and located him later in the day. The individual was arrested on charges of hit-and-run, causing deadly injury and booked into the Butte County Jail. Reports indicated that the man’s bail was set at $160,000. No further information about the circumstances of the arrest were reported.

The Impact of Fatal Accidents

When families first learn that their loved one has lost their life during an accident, they often feel overwhelmed by a strong sense of grief. Such a sudden loss can be very traumatic, and it’s common for families to feel a mix of intense emotions or even feel like they are in a state of shock. Learning to cope with grief can take a long time, but many people are able to find comfort by relying on the support of family and friends.

However, losing a loved one can also have serious financial effects on your family. In many cases, car accident decedents used to be the main income earner in their home or possibly performed services like cleaning and childcare that are expensive to replace. Not only can losing these things make it difficult to afford funeral expenses, but families are often left unsure of how they’ll be able to pay their bills.
