Oroville Family Injured in Accident

I’m Ed Smith, an Oroville personal injury lawyer. A tragic accident happened on Monday, April 17, 2017, along Highway 299 in the community of Blue Lake located in Humboldt County.

What Happened?

Officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) were dispatched to reports of a car accident shortly after 6:30 p.m. on Monday night. When officers arrived at the scene they discovered two minivans carrying multiple passengers involved in the collision. CHP reports state that an Oroville woman was traveling on Highway 299 towards Blue Lake Boulevard when for unknown reasons she drifted into oncoming traffic and collided with another vehicle. The minivan the Oroville woman was driving rolled following the initial impact. The other vehicle involved in the collision was pushed down a nearby embankment and came to a stop hitting a tree.

Were There Injuries?

Yes. The Oroville woman was traveling with her five minor children at the time of the accident, ages ranging from 1 to 7-years old. All of the minors were properly restrained at the time of the accident, but suffered minor to severe injuries in the accident. The driver also suffered injuries in the collision and tragically lost her unborn child. The driver of the other involved vehicle also suffered major injuries in the accident. Sadly, the passenger in the front seat succumbed to her injuries.

Ongoing Investigation and Highway Closures

Investigators from the CHP are handling the investigation of this fatal accident. At this time it is not known if speed, driving under the influence or distracted driving are contributing factors to this tragic accident. Highway 299 was closed to through traffic for a short time following this accident while crews collected preliminary evidence and worked to clear the scene.

We extend our condolences to the loved ones of those who passed away in this crash. We extend our best wishes for a full recovery to those injured.
