One Injured in Woodland Rollover

A Woodland rollover accident left one person with serious injuries on Wednesday, April 22, 2020. According to staff from the Woodland Police Department (WPD), the accident happened in the early afternoon and involved only two cars, one of which was parked. The driver of the vehicle has since been placed under arrest for charges related to driving under the influence. The crash remains under WPD investigation.

Collision Details

The accident happened at 1:35 p.m. on Elm Street near the intersection of Buena Tierra Drive. According to reports, a 19-year-old driver was driving his vehicle on the 1000 block of Elm Street. While attempting to turn onto Buena Tierra Drive, the driver apparently lost control of his car and struck a parked vehicle. The collision caused the first vehicle to roll over.

Officers arriving at the scene of the collision discovered that the driver had suffered injuries. However, the nature of these injuries was not specified. Officers reportedly arrested the driver at the scene on charges of driving under the influence and are considering an additional charge of reckless driving.

Rollover Accidents

Collisions that involve an overturned vehicle have been proven to be especially dangerous. Statistics reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicate that around two percent of U.S. car accidents are rollovers. However, nearly ten percent of deadly U.S. accidents involve an overturned car. This shows that these accidents are more likely than most to involve a deadly injury.

Rollovers are dangerous because of a few key factors. One important factor is that vehicles often aren’t designed and/or built to withstand an impact to the roof. If a car has a roof made of weak materials or that has been poorly designed, it may crumple during a rollover. Because there is nothing protecting drivers and passengers from the metal above them, these cases often result in “roof crush injuries.” In crashes involving these kinds of injuries, the manufacturer of the vehicle is often partially or fully liable for damages suffered during the accident. Be sure to preserve the vehicle so an attorney can have the roof inspected.

Woodland Rollover Data

Reports from WPD and California Highway Patrol (CHP) and gathered by UC Berkeley research groups show that there were 1,454 injurious car crashes in Woodland between 2008 and 2020. Rollovers were the least common type of accident in the city during this period and only accounted for 51 individual crashes (around 3.5 percent of Woodland collisions overall). These 51 accidents left 64 people with injuries that ranged from minor to critical and cost another two people their lives.

In line with national data, Woodland rollovers were typically more serious than collisions overall. Rollovers in Woodland were around twice as likely to either a deadly or fatal injury.
