Man Killed in Brentwood DUI Crash

A 46-year-old man from Concord has been arrested earlier this month on suspicion of a felony DUI  after a head-on accident that left one man dead. Highway 4 was forcibly closed for over an hour, according to authorities. The Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office has revealed the identity of the deceased male as 51-year Jose Munoz-Padilla of Ripon.

I would like to take this time to offer my sorrow and prayers to Mr. Munoz-Padilla’s loved ones that are grieving through this tragic accident.

Brentwood Head-On Collision Details

The incident happened just after 4:30 p.m. that Monday afternoon. CHP officers responded to the accident site, which occurred along the eastbound lanes of Highway 4 near Balfour Road. The collision involved a 2018 Honda SUV that crossed over double yellow lines and went straight into oncoming traffic, CHP officials said. The Honda SUV crashed head-on with a Toyota Corolla that was being driven by Munoz-Padilla. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police arrested Jan Gyllstrom, who has been identified as the SUV driver. He did not suffer any injuries from the crash. A statement given by CHP officials expressed their frustration with the increasing prevalence of DUI-related fatalities, stating that DUI accidents are always preventable every single time. They indicated that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is never acceptable, nor should it ever be tolerated.

Post-Accident Traffic Closures

A traffic alert was sent out at approximately 4:51 p.m., informing all drivers that traffic from both directions would be shut down between the Balfour Road bypass and Marsh Creek Road. Contra Costa sheriff’s deputies were also dispatched to the scene for assistance with traffic diversion for all of the westbound Highway 4 traffic. The road closure continued for another hour and a half before being lifted at 6:25 p.m. in both directions. The backed up traffic took a few hours to smooth out.
