One Dead, One Injured After Sutter County Crash

Two people suffered injuries during a Sutter County crash on Sunday, April 19, 2020. California Highway Patrol (CHP) released reports indicating that the decedent was a 10-year-old boy. The other injured party, who reportedly suffered major trauma, was identified as a 29-year-old Colusa man. Police have arrested one of the drivers involved in the accident on charges related to driving under the influence of alcohol. This crash remains under investigation.

Collision Information

The collision occurred at about 6:35 p.m. on Highway 20 a few miles to the south of Colusa near the South Tarke Road exit. CHP indicated that the Colusa man was driving a Ford Fusion eastbound on Highway 20 when he lost control of his vehicle, eventually crashing into a concrete wall. At the same time, a 59-year-old man from Sacramento was traveling at around 50 miles per hour in a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck while heading west on the highway. The pickup driver was reportedly unable to avoid the crashed sedan and struck the Ford’s right-hand rear end, causing major damage to both cars.

Response

Emergency response personnel at the accident site found that both occupants of the Ford Fusion were critically injured. Tragically, the young passenger was declared deceased on-scene. According to medical officials, the driver suffered compound fractures to his spine. The driver of the Toyota reportedly did not suffer injuries during the accident. Additionally, police indicated that all parties involved in the collision were properly restrained.

Before releasing him into hospital custody, police placed the Ford driver under arrest on suspicion of DUI as well as gross neglect and vehicular manslaughter.
