Add a Canine Family Member This Month

October is the ASPCA’s Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month.  It is a perfect opportunity to help the 3-4 million animals without homes that live in shelters all over America find a special family to be a part of.

Many of us have transitioned to a remote-work lifestyle due to the pandemic, which means we are home more than we used to be.  If you have been thinking about adding a dog to your family, it may be the perfect opportunity given that you will be home to care for the animal during their initial transition into your family.  If you have thought it over and are ready to open your home and heart to a dog in need, check out the various shelters in our area to see what pets are waiting for adoption.  Front Street is the largest agency placing homeless pets in the Sacramento region.  They have adoptable pets online.

Other Ways to Help

Here are some other ideas on how you can help our canine friends this month:

  • Join the ASPCA Fundraiser. This is a simple way to celebrate your love of dogs.  Join the ASPCA on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram for their 31 Days of Rescue Dogs campaign. This requires posting a photo a day throughout the month of your favorite rescue dog and using the hashtag #31DaysOfRescueDogs. The posts should include a request from your followers to donate one dollar per day to your Team ASPCA fundraising page in exchange for you posting cute dog photos. Let your friends and followers know that $31 will help provide shelter,  food, and the chance to join a loving home for a canine in need.  Those generous friends who donate will receive an Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog temporary tattoo, and if you raise at least $250 through your social media campaign, you will earn a Team ASPCA tote bag.  Visit Team ASPCA for more details.
  • Donate. Not everyone is able to adopt a dog at this time, and that is understandable.  By giving a monetary gift to the ASPCA, you will still be helping adoptable dogs find forever homes.  Donations also support the agency’s rescue and adoption programs, which help them get animals off the streets and into safe shelters.  Here is a link for information on how to donate.
  • Take the Cruelty Pledge.  This involves signing a pledge that you will:
    • Keep alert for indications of animal cruelty.
    • Report any signs of animal cruelty to the appropriate enforcement agency.
    • Be an advocate for harsher laws that are designed to protect animals from cruelty.
  • Become a Monthly Member.  If you enlist to donate monthly, you will first be charged on the date the initial transaction is made. Thereafter, the monthly donation will deduct from your account around the 20th of every month.  You can cancel your monthly donations at any time by calling (800) 628-0028. An annual statement that reflects your yearly contributions will be made out in February for your tax purposes.
  • Join the Mobile Action Team.  Details can be found here.
