North Sacramento Car Accident Near High School

A North Sacramento car accident occurred along a stretch of Norwood Avenue on April 5 seriously injuring three people. Sacramento Police reported that a Toyota carrying two individuals, including a teenage girl, was struck by a Nissan. The crash occurred near Norwood High School at about 3:45 in the afternoon. The Nissan was traveling behind the Toyota and rear-ended it, pushing it into a power pole. Speeding is considered a reason for the crash. The area near Bell Avenue has dual speed limits. A 25 m.p.h. limit is in effect when high schoolers are present. It changes to 40 m.p.h. at other times. There is no word about how fast the Nissan was traveling; however, it is possible the lower limit was in effect.

More Details About the Accident

At the current time, police are still trying to piece the events leading to accident together. A police representative said that witnesses have given accounts of what they saw, and more detailed questioning will follow. As of this time, speed is being listed as a reason the North Sacramento car accident occurred. There has been no determination as to whether alcohol or drugs were involved. Arrests have not been made at this time.

Speed and Car Accidents

Many North Sacramento car accidents happen due to speeding. The speed a vehicle is traveling is a big part of the force of impact. The greater the impact, the higher the risk of serious injury or death. In 2017 alone, 9,717 people died on the roads due to speeding. This is roughly 25 percent of all fatalities due to car accidents. While speeding is generally defined as traveling over the speed limit, it can have other meanings. For instance, if a driver is operating his vehicle at a speed that is not safe for road conditions, he is speeding too.

Common Results of Speeding

Speeding can cause the following:

  • Reduce the effectiveness of safety devices such as seat belts and airbags
  • Lengthen the stopping distance
  • Disrupt the driver’s control over his or her vehicle
  • Cause greater injuries to passengers and others involved in the crash

Effect of Speeding on Pedestrians

Speeding is a major factor in pedestrian injuries. For example, a pedestrian hit by a vehicle traveling 20 m.p.h. has a 90-percent chance of surviving. If the vehicle is going 30 m.p.h., the chance of survival is reduced to 50 percent. A car traveling 40 m.p.h. when it hits the pedestrian has a 90-percent chance of killing them. Of all pedestrian deaths, 4 percent are children. It is important to remember to slow down near schools. It is illegal not to.

Reasons Drivers Speed

There are varied reasons why motor vehicle operators speed. Some are listed below:

  • Time: Running late for work or appointments is a big reason drivers speed.
  • Traffic: Congested traffic causes many people to run behind schedule. Some make up for it when they can by speeding.
  • Aggressive behavior: A driver who believes he or she has the right of way all the time is often one who speeds. This accounts for many North Sacramento car accidents.
