Head-On Accident in Napa

On Monday, August 28, 2017, a head-on, double-vehicle accident in Napa reportedly injured two involved individuals.

Accident Details

A report released by California Highway Patrol (CHP) indicated that the collision occurred on Big Ranch Road close to the intersection of El Centro Avenue at about 12:09 p.m. According to the CHP, the collision involved a black Chrysler and a blue Toyota Tercel. The head-on collision reportedly caused the Toyota to overturn and land on its roof. No additional details about what caused the collision have been reported so far.

Response and Injuries

CHP dispatched emergency responders to the location after receiving a call notifying them about the injury accident. When they arrived, responders found that the driver of the Chrysler had sustained serious traumatic injuries and was not able to exit her wrecked vehicle. Firefighters extracted the woman and put her in an ambulance to be taken to an emergency room for medical care.

Responders also found two individuals in the Toyota, the driver and a child who appeared to have received minor injuries.

Traffic

The crash reportedly caused significant delays for drivers on Big Ranch Road for at least an hour. A & T Towing and Vine Towing were called to the scene to help officers clear the roadway for traffic.

Investigation

CHP is actively investigating the incident to understand what caused the collision. Factors that may have influenced the collision include distracted driving, faulty vehicle parts, dangerous roadway conditions, and more.

Head-On Accidents

Head-on accidents are estimated to only account for 2 percent of auto accident collisions, yet account for more than 10 percent of traffic-related fatalities. This is partly because head-on collisions often involve an extremely forceful impact that carries a vehicle’s total momentum and weight.

In the event of a head-on accident, passengers sometimes have a moment to prepare their bodies for impact. However, it is more often the case that head-on accidents happen suddenly and leave passengers with almost no time to brace themselves, leaving them vulnerable to injuries to crucial areas like the spine, brain, chest, and neck. Additionally, frontal collisions in which vehicles travel over the moderate speed of 40 miles per hour usually result in catastrophic injuries.

Another Recent Napa Frontal Collision

This accident is the second head-on car accident that Napa has seen this month. On Tuesday, August 8, 2017, another head-on crash occurred on Highway 12 in Napa, leaving a vehicle occupant with traumatic injuries and prompting medical responders to call for a helicopter ambulance.
