Multiple Car Collisions Cause Problems for Commuters

Sacramento multiple car collisions were seen along Interstate 80 and a nearby on-ramp on December 12. The first accident occurred on the interstate near Madison Avenue, while the second occurred on Madison close to Date Avenue. Both stalled traffic in multiple directions during the morning commute. The accidents resulted in injuries that required an ambulance to transport people to the hospital. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), two lanes of the interstate were shut down for over half an hour. No information was given on how long Madison Avenue was closed because of the car accidents.

Details About the Multiple Car Collisions

The first accident happened at around 7:40 in the morning. No details were provided on the three vehicles involved or which hospital the injured party was transported to for additional evaluation and treatment. In the separate crash along Madison Avenue, another injured person was evaluated by medical personnel with the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department, and an ambulance was called for that person also. The intersection where the second crash occurred is no more than one-quarter mile from the interstate.

Injuries in Multiple Car Collisions

While many injuries can result from a single car accident, let’s take a look at some of the most common ones in multiple car collisions:

  • Whiplash: Cervical strain, also known as whiplash, is one of the most common car accident injuries. It happens due to the rapid back and forth movement of the neck and upper back when one vehicle crashes into another. This injury happens most often in rear-end crashes, which are also one of the most common types of accidents. Whiplash produces symptoms such as neck pain and stiffness. The symptoms don’t always occur when the accident happens but may be delayed for up to 72 hours. Generally, they resolve with conservative treatment, but in other cases, the symptoms can persist for up to several years.
  • Bone fractures: Any bone can break during a car accident. The bones in the extremities are most commonly broken. Symptoms can include bruising, redness and significant pain. Depending on the type of break and its location, the nature of the treatment may involve casting or surgical intervention. In some severe cases, recuperation may be long.
  • Concussion: This injury may occur when a person strikes their head during the accident or from the brain hitting the inside of the skull when the head moves back and forth. Symptoms can include headache, dizziness, ringing in the ears or brief loss of consciousness. Symptoms may appear quickly or not show up for several hours. Some concussions are mild and resolve with rest. In others, the injured party may have difficulty with memory, focus or concentration.
  • Injury to the soft tissues: Any area of the body may have soft tissue injury. This can involve the ligaments, tendons or muscles. Nerves may also be involved. Symptoms include pain worsened by exertion and swelling in the area. This often requires rest and subsequent physical therapy.
  • Psychological injury: Just as physical injuries can impede an injured person’s movement, psychological injuries can have an effect on the person’s life. The person may feel anxious, depressed and withdrawn. In some cases, the injured party may refuse to drive or even leave the house due to anticipation of the accident happening again. This may require the services of a psychologist.
