Motorist Drives Backwards in Sacramento

I’m Ed Smith, a North Highlands personal injury attorney. A female passenger observed a motorist driving backwards along a busy Sacramento street and began recording the reckless driving incident on her cell phone. The woman’s video was released on the news where it later went viral on social media.

What Happened?

A woman observed a white Ford Crown Victoria facing traffic along Watt Avenue during the evening commute. The woman initially thought that the vehicle was going to be towed. Then the expected happened. The engine of the vehicle revved, the tires screeched and the motorist began driving the vehicle backward down Watt Avenue towards North Highlands. The woman, who wanted to keep her identity anonymous, began recording video footage on her cell phone of the alleged reckless driving incident.

The following video shows the driver of the white Ford Crown Victoria driving backwards during the traffic commute hour along Watt Avenue near North Highlands. The alleged reckless driver in the video was driving backward for almost a mile. The motorist drove past three red lights at approximately 35 miles per hour and all in reverse. Thankfully, no one was injured by the erratic driver.

Who Was Driving the Vehicle Backward?

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the registered owner of the Ford Crown Victoria. However, records from the license plate indicate that the registered owner of the vehicle has previous history of run-ins with the law. Some of these run-ins include operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license. It is unknown whether the owner was driving the vehicle in the video.

Will the Driver Face Charges?

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the motorist that was driving backwards in the video will be charged if caught. CHP is unsure how many penalties the alleged reckless motorist might face.
