Intersection Crash on Madison Avenue and Polk

A motorcyclist suffered a major injury on May 24 in a North Highlands collision that involved a motor vehicle. The accident occurred around 11:39 a.m. at the intersection of Madison Avenue and Polk Street. Although the collision was initially reported by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) as a hit-and-run, the driver turned around and returned to the scene. Both the motorcycle and vehicle were towed from the scene. The motorcyclist was transported by medics to a nearby hospital for additional evaluation and treatment of their injuries. The CHP is conducting an investigation to determine fault in the two-vehicle crash.

Dangers That Can Result in a Major Injury Motorcycle Accident

The road is filled with a number of hazards for motorcyclists that can result in a major injury accident, including dangerous drivers and badly maintained roads. Despite riders’ best efforts, motorcycle accidents can result in serious injuries. The following are some of the risks that motorcycle riders may encounter while out on the road that can lead to an accident:

  • Left-turning vehicles: It is common for a driver to make a turn in front of a motorcycle rider and cause a crash, which can result in a major injury to the rider. In these situations, the driver should be on the lookout for oncoming traffic. A collision can be avoided by being extra cautious, given the difficulty in judging an oncoming motorcycle’s distance and speed.
  • Distracted drivers: Drivers who text, talk on their phones, adjust their radios, or do anything else that diverts their attention from the surrounding traffic and roadway around them are at risk of causing an accident.
  • Speeding drivers: Speeding motorists are the cause of many collisions involving motorcycles. When drivers speed, their vehicle requires a longer stopping distance, and they are at a higher risk of losing control of their vehicle.
  • Drunk driving: An impaired driver can cause a motorcycle accident. An intoxicated driver finds it hard to stay within their lane, judge how far other vehicles are from them and exhibit slowed reflexes, which makes it difficult for them to stop if an emergency occurs, such as an impending crash.
  • Government neglect of roadways: Poorly maintained roads can contribute to a motorcycle accident with a major injury. Poor or neglected government maintenance can consist of potholes, bad lighting at night, pavement upheavals and other difficulties, any of which could cause a motorcycle to crash. When a government entity is negligent, it may be held financially responsible for a motorcyclist’s major injury. However, because the statute of limitations for filing against a government entity is only six months, hiring an injury lawyer to ensure paperwork is correct and deadlines met can be a good idea.
  • Defective motorcycle parts: When a defect occurs in a motorcycle part such as the steering, accelerator, or brakes, it can lead to a major injury accident. In these cases, the manufacturer may be held liable by filing a product liability claim.
