Motorcycle Crash Kills UC Merced Coach

I’m Ed Smith, a Merced motorcycle accident attorney. We were saddened to learn about a tragic motorcycle crash recently in Merced. We have learned that the head coach for the UC Merced cross country team passed away in a motorcycle accident on the afternoon of Monday, November 28, 2016.

What Happened?

A motorcyclist was traveling west along the first block of East Bellevue Road. For reasons that are not known, the motorcyclist drove off the road in the vicinity of El Capitan High School and crashed into a tree. According to officers from the Merced Police Department, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Motorcyclist Identified as a UC Merced Head Coach – Cross Country Team

The motorcyclist was identified as 27-year-old Ryan Nunez. Nunez was the head coach for the men’s and women’s cross country teams for UC Merced. Nunez was working his third year as the head coach at the university. Nunez’s coaching skills were recognized in the recent Cal Pac Championships on November 19, 2016. This was where the men’s and women’s cross country teams for the university were placed second and third. Two of the runners were also qualified for the national championships. According to David Dunham, the athletics director for UC Merced, Nunez was driven to making a great program and establishing personal connections with his student athletes. Nunez will be forever remembered by his loved ones and by all those he inspired. He is survived by his wife, Cecilia Vazquez. Vazquez is a staff member in the Office of International Affairs for UC Merced. A GoFundMe account has been created to help Nunez’s family members with the expenses for his memorial.

We extend our condolences to the loved ones of the young man that passed away in this tragic motorcycle accident.
