Motor Vehicle Accident Involving Pedestrian Occurs at Watt Avenue Intersection

A pedestrian was hospitalized as the result of a motor vehicle accident in North Highlands on July 5. The crash occurred around 10:00 p.m. at the intersection of Watt and Orange Grove Avenues, as reported by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), who responded to the incident. The vehicle involved in the accident left the scene without stopping. However, police received a description that it was a red sedan.

Pedestrian Suffers Head Trauma in Motor Vehicle Accident

An ambulance was called to take the pedestrian, who had suffered head trauma, to Mercy San Juan Medical Center for evaluation and treatment. Several lanes surrounding the intersection were blocked by the motor vehicle injury accident. Authorities are seeking the hit-and-run driver. An analysis is being undertaken by CHP traffic accident investigators to determine how the collision occurred and to help them locate the fleeing driver.

The Causes of Pedestrian Accidents

Pedestrians are among the most vulnerable to injuries in an accident, and many collisions are caused by a negligent driver. This danger is caused by several common factors, including:

  • Pedestrians are less visible to motorists due to the increasing number of SUVs and trucks on the road.
  • Speeding often causes pedestrian injuries. Due to speed, it is much more difficult for drivers to avoid hitting people on foot.
  • Drivers can also cause accidents by negligently turning left without looking for people on foot.
  • Drunk driving contributes to many pedestrian accidents. The ability to control a vehicle and think clearly is lost in impaired drivers.
  • Distracted driving causes more accidents today than ever before. If the driver is in this situation, he or she can talk on the phone, send text messages, change the radio, and other types of careless behaviors.

When Pedestrians Are Injured in an Accident

Liability is based on negligence. Negligent drivers cause injuries to pedestrians and other motorists when they fail to uphold their duty of care toward them. An injured party must prove negligence caused the accident in order to prove liability.

Accident-Related Pedestrian Injuries

In an accident, the following injuries are common:

  • Sprains and strains of the cervical spine, or whiplash, are soft tissue injuries. Cervical sprains may cause months or years of neck, head and upper back pain.
  • Broken bones: Broken bones commonly occur in all types of collisions, especially in a motor vehicle injury accident involving a pedestrian.
  • Head and brain injuries: A brain or head injury can greatly affect the quality of a person’s life. In cases of hematomas and traumatic brain injuries, surgery may be necessary.

Investigation of Pedestrian and Motor Vehicle Accidents

Injury to a pedestrian requires an investigation to be resolved. Our investigators gather evidence of negligence at the crash site. Finding out what caused the accident and how it happened is the goal of investigating the accident scene. As part of the investigation, witnesses must be contacted, real-time video is obtained, and a reconstruction is done of the accident.
