Injured Bicyclist Rescued from Dry Creek

On Saturday, September 24, 2016, just before 6:00 p.m., the Modesto Fire Department responded to a call of an injured bicyclist who had fallen into Dry Creek.

What Happened?

Officials with the Modesto Fire Department reported that a bicyclist had miscalculated a bump along the biking trail they were riding on and fell about 20 feet. The bike the cyclist fell from landed a short distance away in the water.

What Type of Injuries?

Paramedics and firefighters rescued the cyclist and said he suffered a broken leg. A basket and ladder were used to remove the injured victim from the creek area.

What are Common Types of bicycle accidents?

  • Careless or distracted drivers
  • Lack of proper road signage
  • Potholes, cracks or bumps in the road or course
  • Drivers who are under the influence
  • Drivers who make unsafe lane changes or turns
  • Motorists who park on the street and fail to check for cyclists before they open their car doors
  • Drivers who fail to maintain traffic laws by drifting between lanes

Types of Bicycle Injuries

Bicycle accidents can lead to severe injuries or even death. Bicycle accidents can be very dangerous for the rider because they have virtually no protection around their body when hit by a motor vehicle. Sometimes a bicyclist struck by a car has a limb nearly severed in the crash and has to have it amputated. Unfortunately, bicycles don’t provide the same safety features that vehicles do, such as metal enclosures, seat belts, airbags, and antilock brakes. Cyclists are only equipped with the gear they choose to wear such as helmets and gloves.

Dangers of Being Thrown Off Bicycle

Since it isn’t possible for a cyclist to be securely contained inside of a bicycle, in most cases the cyclist is thrown from it. When this happens the cyclist faces the risk of being hit by an oncoming vehicle. While these types of accidents are preventable, they are rarely foreseeable. Bicycle accidents are usually unexpected and take place suddenly, which leaves a cyclist with little to no time to respond. Bicycles travel at a relatively low speed, which makes it very difficult for the cyclist to effectively move out of the way of a motor vehicle to effectively avoid a collision.
