Modesto Accident Fatally Injures Elderly Woman

An elderly woman passed away on the morning of February 11 after being struck by an oncoming vehicle in north Modesto. The incident occurred along Standiford Avenue in the vicinity of Polaris Street at around 9:00 in the morning. An elderly woman driving a Chevrolet Malibu pulled her vehicle over to the right side of the road. For unknown reasons, the woman exited her car and was standing next to her open driver’s side door. One vehicle approaching the Chevrolet was able to move over in time to avoid a collision. A second car, identified as a Nissan Rogue, was unable to stop and collided with the elderly pedestrian. Sadly, the woman succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Officials have identified the decedent as 76-year-old Paula Matos of Modesto. I would like to send my thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Ms. Matos while they are grieving their tragic loss.

Common Reasons for Pedestrian Accidents

Driver error is a leading cause of pedestrian accidents. Some of the common reasons for these collisions include:

  • Distracted driving can divert a motorist’s attention from the road and contribute to a pedestrian crash.
  • Driving while impaired is a significant problem on the road. Since drug or alcohol consumption adversely affects the reaction times and thought processes of a motorist, it can be a dangerous combination when an intoxicated driver crosses paths with a pedestrian.
  • Failing to slow down when approaching a pedestrian  crossing or driving above the posted speed limits
  • Failure to stop at a designated crosswalk for a pedestrian can cause an accident. Conversely, a collision may also occur when a driver overtakes another vehicle stopped at a crosswalk for a walker.
  • Not yielding to pedestrians when making a left, right or U-turn can lead to devastating consequences for all involved.

Auto Accidents and Wrongful Death

Families who have lost a loved one in a car accident may be unsure of how their financial losses will be covered. In these situations, a family can turn to a wrongful death claim to recover for their damages. These vary depending on the details and facts of each case. However, medical expenses, income loss, and household services may be recovered in a wrongful death case. In many cases, emotional damages may be claimed as well. These can include loss of consortium for a surviving spouse and loss of parental guidance for a surviving child. To learn more about the types of damages that may be claimed through these cases, watch the following video. If you would like advice about your case, it is essential to speak with an experienced wrongful death attorney in Modesto.

How a Modesto Wrongful Death Lawyer Can Help

After a wrongful death car accident, the family of the deceased may have a difficult time coming to terms with the loss. Their time of grieving and mourning may be compounded by financial concerns, especially if the decedent was the primary provider for the household. An experienced wrongful death lawyer in Modesto can help in times like these by obtaining the financial compensation a family needs to move forward from their loss. While no amount of money can truly replace the loss of a family member, compensation from a wrongful death claim can help a family focus on recovering without financial worry.
