Accident Along Westbound I-80 Injures One Person

A minor injury was reported in Sacramento following a two-vehicle crash on December 1. The collision occurred around 6:15 p.m. on westbound I-80 at the northbound Northgate Boulevard on-ramp. A white cargo van and blue BMW sedan were involved in the crash, according to the incident report by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), with one of the vehicles blocking the number three lane.

One Patient Transported for Medical Care Following Minor Injury Crash

Medics with the Sacramento Fire Department arrived to assess injuries and determined that one patient had suffered a minor injury in the crash. The incident is being investigated by the CHP to find out how it happened.

When Injuries Aren’t Really Minor

Many times, injuries in a car crash are thought to be minor at the scene of the accident. However, as time goes by, additional symptoms evolve and a visit to a physician confirms that they are anything but minor. These evolving symptoms are called delayed. Let’s take a look at this common occurrence when a minor injury is really much more severe.

When an individual is involved in an accident, several things can happen. The injured party can develop what is referred to as brain fog afterward. They have difficulty remembering the incident and are often unable to focus. The opposite also occurs where the person’s mind is in overdrive. The third involves the release of adrenaline, the body’s fight or flight hormone, which makes the person impervious to the pain they are experiencing so they believe it is a minor injury.

Delayed Symptoms That Are Common

The most common delayed symptoms are:

  • Headaches:  These can develop days to weeks after the accident. They may be due to muscle strain or sprain. However, they can also herald a much more serious injury, such as a subdural hematoma. This is a collection of blood that puts pressure on the brain and is caused by a blow to the head. The vast majority of blood clots are symptomatic within days after the crash. However, if the individual is older, they may not show symptoms for weeks to a month after the incident. In both cases, medical and surgical intervention is needed.
  • Neck pain: Cervical sprain is frequently caused by a hit from behind accident and is referred to as whiplash. The back and forth motion of the head causes damage to the muscles in the neck and upper back. Whiplash symptoms usually appear within 72 hours after the crash and resolve within a month to six weeks with rest and analgesia. In some cases, the problem persists for a year or more and causes a degree of disability.
  • Abdominal trauma: In a car accident, the abdomen is prone to injury due to the steering wheel or seat belt. This trauma can cause intraabdominal bleeding, which is not immediately recognized. Often the individual will return home and begin to feel faint. This is due to lowered blood pressure secondary to the bleeding. When this happens, it is considered a medical emergency and requires immediate attention.
