Merced County Fatal Rollover Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Merced personal injury lawyer. A group of four were driving together in Merced County during the evening hours of Sunday, May 28, 2017. The group was on their way to visit a family member when they were involved in a tragic rollover accident.

What Happened?

A 19-year-old man was behind the wheel of his 2004 Ford Expedition traveling along Sandy Mush Road at approximately 6:15pm. The man was driving with a 44-year-old Salinas woman, a 25-year-old Salinas man and a 6-year-old girl to visit a family member in custody at the John Latorraca Corectional Facility.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the man allegedly fell asleep while driving. The man woke up while the vehicle was overturning, attempted to regain control, and the SUV rolled into a field.

Were They Injured?

The condition of the driver has not yet been released. The 25-year-old Salinas man in the front passenger seat refused medical treatment. The 6-year-old daughter of the man complained of leg and abdominal pain. The girl was transported via air ambulance to the Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera. The 44-year-old Salinas woman was allegedly not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. Unfortunately, the woman succumbed to her injuries due to the accident.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the family members of the woman that passed away in this devastating rollover accident.

Preventing Rollover Accidents

Rollover accidents oftentimes involve vehicles such as pickups, vans and sport utility vehicles (SUVs). The reason for this originates from the high center of gravity in these vehicles. Vehicles with a narrow base and high center of gravity tend to exert more force during turns. This may lead to a reduction in vehicle stability, which may cause the motorist to lose control and allow the vehicle to overturn. It is best to always watch your speed, conduct turns at lower speeds and avoid distractions at all costs to prevent you or your loved ones from the risk of injury from a potential rollover accident.
