I’m Ed Smith, a Merced auto accident attorney. In Merced County on the night of Sunday, January 1, 2017, a pedestrian was struck by two different cars while trying to cross Highway 99. Sadly, the pedestrian passed away at the scene as a result of his injuries.

Pedestrian Accident Fatally Injures Man

A man crossing the lanes of Highway 99 north in the vicinity of Collier Road between Livingston and Delhi in Merced County was struck by an oncoming vehicle traveling in the fast lane. The vehicle fled from the scene of the crash. A second vehicle (identified as a 2013 Hyundai Accent), was unable to avoid the downed man due to low visibility (there is a lack of lighting along this stretch of the highway). The motorist of the Hyundai pulled over and waited until authorities arrived. When officers arrived at the scene of the accident, they pronounced the man deceased.

How Insurance Covers Hit-and-Run Victims

Victims that have been involved in hit-and-run pedestrian accidents may be covered by insurance if they or someone in their household have uninsured/under-insured motorist insurance coverage. This type of coverage covers for your damages if you have been injured in a hit-and-run accident or an accident involving a motorist operating a motor vehicle without insurance. The claim must be filed with your own insurance company within the statute of limitations, which is two years in California. Consult with an experienced personal injury attorney for more information.
