McKinleyville Man Suffers Fatal Injuries During Del Norte County Crash

On Friday, August 6, 2021, a man from McKinleyville tragically lost his life during a Del Norte County crash. California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the incident involved two vehicles and occurred on a rural highway location in the afternoon. In addition to the fatally injured individual, three other people suffered serious injuries. At this time, Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office authorities are withholding the decedent’s identity.

Crash Details

The accident happened at 1:45 p.m. on Highway 101 close to mile marker 10.8. According to police, a man had been driving a 1997 Ford northbound on the highway when he lost control of the vehicle for unknown reasons. As a result, the Ford drifted over the median and entered southbound traffic. While traveling in oncoming lanes, the Ford collided head-on with a 2017 Acura MDX. Both vehicles were severely damaged during the crash.

Response

CHP sent response personnel to the site immediately after receiving a call reporting the accident. According to reports, Klamath Fire Protection, CHP, and the Yurok Tribal Police all assisted with accident response. Once they arrived, responders discovered that four people in total had been involved in the accident; the Ford driver, the Acura driver, and two Acura passengers. All individuals were found with major injuries

Sadly, officials pronounced the Ford driver deceased on-site. The driver and passengers of the Acura were all transported via Del Norte ambulance to the Sutter Coast Hospital for emergency treatment. Updates on their conditions remain unreported.

Investigation

As CHP Crescent City Area Office conducts a full investigation into the accident, police have not yet stated what factors could have caused the accident. However, investigators did report that driving under the influence does not appear to be an accident factor at this time.

Fatal accidents are difficult to investigate, and police can have a hard time fully understanding the accident if they are unable to interview one or more of the involved drivers. Sadly, this can mean that causal factors are never uncovered, leaving families of decedents and injured individuals unable to claim fair compensation from at-fault parties.

In order to ensure that an accident receives a thorough investigation, it’s important to reach out to a McKinleyville wrongful death attorney. An experienced lawyer can investigate the crash themselves while prioritizing you and your family’s best interests.
