May is Bicycle Safety Month: Helmets

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Bicycle Accident Lawyer. Now that Spring is here, many of us are getting on our bikes and enjoying the warm weather. During the month of May we like to bring attention and focus on the importance of bicycle safety. Good bicycling habits can go along way to ensure our safety the whole year through.

Helmet Safety – Wear One, Every Trip, Every Time

  • Lay down the law and make it a rule that you and your kids wear a bike helmet. Pick a helmet that gets the stamp of approval by US Consumer Product Safety Commission. A helmet is your most important source of protection should you take a fall or get in a crash
  • We have found that if we let our children help in the choosing of their helmet they are less reluctant to wear one.
  • Be sure the helmet fits properly and teach everyone the proper way to put in on right. A good helmet fits well. It needs to be resting on top of the head in a level position. It should never rock forward, side to side or backwards.
  • Helmet straps should always be buckled securely. Remember to buckle up the helmet everytime you ride. Buckle securely, but not too tight.
  • EYES: Place the helmet on top of your head. Now look up and make sure you see the bottom rim of your helmet. It should be about one or two finger-widths above your eyebrows.
  • EARS: Be sure the helmet straps form a “V” right under your ears when properly buckled. Your straps should be secure but comfortable.
  • MOUTH: Now open your mouth as wide as you possibly can. You should be able to feel pressure from the helmet hugging your head.
