SNELLING, CA – A tragic accident occurred on the morning of May 16, 2025, resulting in the loss of one life and serious injuries to another, according to a report from the California Highway Patrol.

At approximately 9:42 a.m., the Merced Communication Center received a call about a head-on collision near the intersection of State Route 59 and Snelling Road. When CHP officers arrived on the scene, they found that the crash involved a motorcycle and a pickup truck.

Preliminary findings indicate that a 92-year-old man from Coulterville was driving a 2017 Toyota pickup southbound on SR-59 and had begun to slow down as he approached Snelling Road. For reasons still under investigation, he attempted a left turn and inadvertently entered the path of a northbound motorcyclist—a 72-year-old man from Hilmar, who was riding a 2000 Honda at approximately 55 mph. The two vehicles collided head-on.

The motorcyclist, who was wearing a helmet, was ejected from his bike and sadly succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck sustained major injuries and was airlifted to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto for treatment.

At this time, authorities do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved. The investigation into the exact cause of the crash is ongoing.
