Man Pleads Not Guilty in Thousand Oaks Car Accident

I’m Ed Smith, and I’m a Thousand Oaks car accident lawyer. A 20-year-old Camarillo man entered a not-guilty plea in court on June 8 to charges of vehicular manslaughter with DUI and trying to leave the accident scene after his truck smashed into the back of a home in December 2016. The crash was responsible for the wrongful death of an elderly man who was in a back room of the building at the time.

Accident Details

The accident occurred when the pickup the man was driving passed through some brush, flew off an embankment and crashed into the home where the elderly man was visiting. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office reported that there were five persons in the home at the time, but the others were in different parts of the house and remained uninjured. A neighbor reported that the brush in that area was dense and that it would be difficult for someone driving at a normal rate of speed to pass through it. The man who caused the accident was arrested at the scene of the crash on suspicion of DUI.

Pretrial Hearing Set

A pretrial hearing is scheduled for August 16 on the matter. In the meantime, the man accused of the crime remains free on bail that was set at $50,000.

Accidents Caused by Drunk Drivers in Ventura

In 2014, the latest year for statistics from the California Office of Traffic Safety, there were 883 persons killed or injured in motor vehicle accidents. Of that number, drunk driving contributed to 83 of the crashes. County wide, there were 4,117 persons killed or injured in motor vehicle accidents. Of those, 367 were victims of a drunk driver.

Injuries Caused by Car Crashes

Car crashes can come out of the blue and leave behind serious injuries or cause a wrongful death when the act is committed out of serious negligence. Some injuries caused by car accidents include traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, broken bones and serious abdominal trauma.

The injury itself not only leads to lost time from work and medical expenses, it also leads to the worry about how those expenses will be paid. When your accident is caused by another person’s negligence, an experienced personal injury lawyer can help to recover those expenses. While the injured person still has to go through the healing process, knowing that the financial end of it is covered at least removes some of that worry.
