Elverta Road Run-Off-Road Accident Results in Major Injury

A major injury was reported in a traffic accident in Sacramento near the airport on November 9. The accident was described by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) as occurring around 7:35 in the evening at West Elverta Road and Metro Air Parkway. A four-door vehicle reportedly left the roadway for unknown reasons and landed in a ditch on its wheels. A wrecker equipped with a 40-50 foot chain was needed to recover the vehicle.

One Person Suffered a Major Injury

Emergency responders with Sac Metro Fire were at the scene to assess the injuries of a patient from the vehicle. That patient was reported to have a facial injury and a broken leg. They were transported by emergency responders to Mercy San Juan Medical Center in Carmichael for treatment and additional evaluation. The accident is being investigated to find out why the vehicle left the road and crashed.

Causes of Off-Road Crashes

Run-off-road crashes are dangerous and commonly cause serious injuries or result in fatalities. Most of these accidents are caused by driver negligence such as:

  • Speeding is a major reason for all types of traffic collisions that cause a major injury. One of the reasons speeding is so dangerous is that the driver can lose control.
  • Poorly designed roadways that have too sharp a curve can lead to an accident. If it can be shown that the road design caused the accident, the injured person may be able to place a claim with the government entity in charge.
  • Distracted driving is the most common reason for an accident. Texting, talking on a cell phone and other behaviors take the motorist’s eyes from the road just long enough to lose control or be involved in a crash.
  • Poorly maintained roadways or insufficient lighting can lead to a major injury accident. Again, the government entity charged with maintenance may be responsible for an accident.
  • Defective parts in the vehicle can easily cause a car to go off the road. Defective brakes, steering, accelerator or another part can make a vehicle difficult to impossible to control, which can cause a crash.
  • Fatigue can lead to a major injury accident. In some cases, it is because the driver performs shift work or just stayed up too late. In others, the driver may be taking prescription medicine that causes drowsiness.
  • Hit-and-run drivers can cause an accident and then leave the scene. In these cases, it may initially appear as though the accident involved a single vehicle. An experienced injury lawyer can locate the evidence to show otherwise.

Investigation of a Crash

Because many factors come into play in a single-vehicle crash, it is important to discover the cause. Our Sacramento car accident law firm investigators are experienced in finding the evidence needed to support a client’s claim. Among the areas investigated for evidence are:

  • The vehicle is checked to ensure that a manufacturer defect didn’t cause a major injury accident. If it did, the manufacturer and others may be held responsible through a product liability lawsuit.
  • The police report is checked for accuracy and witnesses interviewed.
  • Nearby road and traffic surveillance cameras are checked to see if the accident was captured on tape. If it was, it may help indicate why the accident happened and if another motorist was involved.
  • Accident reconstruction is performed and photos are taken of the vehicle and crash site as well as any roadway marks.
  • Signs of government negligence are looked for such as poor lighting, overhanging foliage, debris in the roadway and others.
