Major Injury Collision

A major injury collision occurred on November 15 along California State Route 160 when two vehicles collided head-on. The number and identities of those who were injured in the accident were not reported. The crash occurred in a rural region outside of Isleton shortly after 12:30 in the afternoon in an area of the highway called River Road in front of the Delta Diamond Farm Event Center. Firefighters and paramedics arrived at the scene to attend to the injured. Major injuries were reported, but it is as yet unknown where the injured were transported. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is in charge of investigating the crash to determine the cause and the party responsible for the accident.

Reasons for Head-On Collisions

There are a number of reasons that head-on collisions occur, and they are one of the most serious types of car accidents. Often they are due to passing on an undivided highway, turning onto a road when another vehicle is coming and inclement weather. Other reasons include speeding, which prevents the driver from having sufficient time to slow down and distracted driving. Drugged or drunk drivers are a significant cause for head-on collisions. This type of accident is often a major injury collision.

Injuries in a Head-On Collision

A major injury collision such as one that is head-on often causes severe trauma. This is because, on a highway, vehicles are moving at a much faster speed than on a city street. The impact of two vehicles head-to-head is much like one car moving at high speed and crashing into a concrete wall. Unlike other types of accidents, the headrest is no protection for occupants in a head-on collision. Instead, they are pushed forward against the seat belts and may collide with the steering wheel, windshield or other parts of the vehicle. Following are the types of trauma that can result from a major injury collision:

  • Neck injuries can range from sprains to damage to the spinal cord or voice box.
  • Traumatic brain injuries range from a concussion to bleeding, hematoma and coma or death.
  • Spinal cord trauma can be partial or complete, causing numbness, lack of bladder and bowel control and problems breathing to partial or total paralysis
  • Abdominal injuries range from internal bleeding to organ damage such as to the bowel, spleen, and liver. These types of injuries often require fast emergency care to repair.
  • Chest trauma may occur from striking the steering wheel or the dash, especially if the seat belt does not hold. Injuries include bruising, broken or cracked ribs and damage to the lungs or heart.
  • Broken bones in a major injury collision can involve any part of the body. Although arm and leg fractures are common, pelvic fractures can be among the most serious, requiring surgery and an extended period of recuperation.
  • Facial injuries can range from lacerations to broken bones and teeth. A major injury collision may also damage the eyes.
  • Amputations occur when the human body is caught between two pieces of metal in a major injury collision. Usually, a finger or toe may be lost, but in other cases, it may be an arm or leg. Amputations can occur directly or be necessary as a result of a crush injury.
  • Burn injuries occur when a vehicle catches on fire and can be severe. Treatment and the recuperative period depend on the extent and severity of the burns.
