Serious Red Bluff Trucking Crash

A man from the community of Cottonwood was seriously injured in Red Bluff trucking crash on Sunday, April 5, 2020. California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the accident involved two vehicles as well as a cow that had been standing in the road. The seriously injured individual, identified as a 45-year-old man, was taken to a local hospital. However, updates on his condition have not been provided by hospital staff. The collision remains under an active CHP investigation.

Crash Information

The collision occurred at around 8:30 p.m. on Highway Interstate 5 close to the Flores Avenue overpass just south of the city of Red Bluff. CHP indicated that a big-rig was driving southbound on the highway when it struck a cow. After striking the animal, the big-rig careened over the median and entered northbound traffic, eventually colliding head-on with an oncoming passenger vehicle.

CHP dispatched an emergency response team to the collision scene directly after being notified about the incident. When the team arrived, they found that the passenger vehicle driver had been severely hurt and had him rushed to a hospital via ground ambulance. The semi-truck driver, a resident of Los Angeles County, was reportedly found with minor injuries. Whether or not he received hospital care has not been reported.

Investigation

While CHP is investigating the incident, a full report regarding factors involved in the crash has not been released. While the accident did involve an animal in the road, collisions like this one often include more than one causal factor. Common factors include issues with the road, defective truck and/or car parts, poor truck maintenance schedules, and more.

Trucking Accidents and Taking Action

Large commercial trucks are usually owned by a holding company that operates a whole fleet of similar vehicles. Because these companies have such large operations, they are very aware of the risks that come along with driving their vehicles. For this reason, trucking companies are typically prepared to defend themselves from financial liability right away and will even send their own private team to investigate the crash.
