Chico Semi-Truck Accident Requires Emergency Extrication

According to California Highway Patrol (CHP), a major Chico semi-truck accident took place on Tuesday, December 3, 2019. The collision reportedly involved multiple vehicles and happened on southbound Highway 99 just before the Interstate 5 junction, causing serious traffic blockages during commute hours. The extent of the injuries suffered during the accident has not yet been reported. However, police reports indicated that at least one vehicle was severely damaged during the crash and one individual needed to be extracted from the wreckage. The crash remains under investigation.

Truck Accidents in Butte County

Butte County has a relatively high population compared to neighboring areas and sees a lot of traffic. Because some of the areas largest highways run right through county lines, the area also has a high volume of semi-trucks passing through in order to haul agricultural products, consumer goods, and other cargo between northern and southern areas of the state.

According to data filed in police reports, there were 10,813 traumatic vehicle accidents in Chico between 2007 and 2019. Out of these collisions, about 2.5 percent involved a large commercial vehicle, making up 285 injury-causing truck accidents over 13 years.

Notably, collisions involving a large truck were much more likely to involve a fatal or serious injury. While the fatality rate for Butte County crashes altogether was around three percent, trucking accidents were fatal nearly six percent of the time. Likewise, severe injuries were about five percent more common in trucking accidents.

Truck Accidents and Quick Action

As shown above, trucks are much more likely to cause a serious injury in the event of a crash. Furthermore, these vehicles are usually owned by large companies that operate a whole fleet of trucks. For these companies, accidents are simply a liability of their business. Because of this, trucking companies are usually ready to begin building a legal defense right away. It’s common for trucking companies to have a legal team travel to the accident scene in order to conduct their own investigation. By taking this action, companies hope to disclaim responsibility for damages.

Because trucking companies take action so quickly, crash survivors can be put in a difficult situation. Not only are they faced with a difficult recovery process, but they need to worry about how they will pay their medical bills when the liable party is doing everything they can to avoid paying for damages. This is why it’s vital to call a Chico truck accident lawyer right away. Having an attorney early on in an accident case is often critical to claiming the full amount of compensation you are owed.
