Madera Major Injury Pedestrian Accident

A pedestrian accident in rural Madera County left a boy injured on December 3, 2018. The incident occurred at approximately 6:30  in the morning along Road 25 in the vicinity of Avenue 9 1/2, just southwest of Madera. A 23-year-old Madera resident was driving his van southbound along Road 25 when his vehicle struck a puddle, hydroplaned and veered off the roadway. The van reportedly crossed both traffic lanes and collided with a 17-year-old boy, who was waiting for the school bus at the time. The impact of the collision allegedly propelled the child approximately 100 feet, causing him to suffer serious lower body injuries, including internal trauma and bone fractures. The boy was transported via air ambulance to a hospital in Fresno for treatment. An update regarding his condition has not yet been released by officials.

Investigation of the Madera Major Injury Pedestrian Collision

The cause of the pedestrian accident is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Officials reported speeding and drunk driving as possible factors for the collision. Moreover, the van driver was booked into the Madera County Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence after his release from the hospital. Details regarding his blood alcohol content level were not immediately available.

Pedestrian Accidents Involving Children

Children are at a higher risk of being involved in a pedestrian accident than adults. This is due in part to their lower stature and ability to evaluate their surrounding risks as a walker. A driver’s view of the road for children can sometimes be compromised by blind spots such as the hood of their vehicle or back mirror. Conversely, younger children may not fully understand the severe dangers cars present while walking on the street. Regardless of the reasons, pedestrian accidents involving children can result in serious injuries.

Pedestrian Accidents and Pediatric Injuries

When a child is struck by a vehicle on the road, the results can be traumatic. The most common pediatric injuries seen in pedestrian accidents tend to be abdominal injuries, chest damage, broken bones, upper and lower extremity injuries, and musculoskeletal trauma. Even minor pedestrian accidents could lead to a pediatric traumatic brain injury or even wrongful death in some extreme cases.
