Lake County Man Dead After Local Accident

Officials from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office reported that a local man passed away after being involved in an auto accident that took place on an area highway on Monday, May 27, 2019. California Highway Patrol (CHP) indicated that the crash involved a motorcycle as well as multiple passenger vehicles. The fatally injured individual was identified as 29-year-old, Nice resident, Joshua Calderon. According to reports, Calderon is survived by a wife and five children. I would like to extend my condolences to Mr. Calderon’s family and friends during this tragic time.

Crash Information

Calderon had been riding his motorcycle on State Route 20 close to Upper Lake at about 11:30 p.m. He had been driving westbound on a black-colored 2005 Harley Davidson at unknown speeds. For reasons that remain under investigation, Calderon crashed his vehicle, and the motorcycle fell onto its left side. The bike then slid west, ejecting Calderon onto the middle of the highway. The motorcycle reportedly came to a stop partially on the northern highway shoulder with its headlights on.

Shortly after the accident took place, a woman driving a gold-colored Chrysler Sebring east on the highway approached the crash location. The woman told police that she saw the wrecked motorcycle before noticing Calderon lying partially in the eastbound lane. Police stated that the woman did not have time to avoid striking Calderon.

After the Chrysler struck Calderon, the driver turned around to check on the injured man. Meanwhile, a third vehicle struck Calderon. Police stated that the third vehicle did not stop and drove west away from the accident scene. Officers are still attempting to locate the missing vehicle and driver.

Response

When responders arrived at the crash scene, they found Calderon in critical condition. Despite best efforts from medical personnel, Calderon tragically lost his life before he could be transported to a hospital for treatment. No other people suffered physical injuries during the incident.

Investigation

Police are currently investigating this accident. When asked whether or not CHP was treating the incident as a hit-and-run, Public Information Officer, Joel Skeen reported that they are “investigating all possibilities” and “haven’t clearly identified the role” that the unknown vehicle played in the accident, noting that police are treating the missing car as a “vehicle of interest.” Anybody with information that could help officers with their investigation of this accident has been asked to call the Kelseyville CHP office at (707) 279-0103.

Fundraiser

A fundraiser has been started to help Mr. Calderon’s family cover burial and funeral expenses and support themselves after this tragic accident. According to the fundraiser page, Calderon was the sole provider for his family and passed away almost 500 miles away from his main home. The fundraising page for the Calderon family can be found here.

Recovering Damages

After fatal accidents, families are often able to recover compensation for their losses from negligent parties. In cases where drivers cannot be held responsible for their actions, families may be able to claim compensation from insurers through uninsured/underinsured motorist coverages. While many people are unsure of whether or not they will be able to claim payments after fatal accidents, it is important to speak to an experienced wrongful death lawyer in order to know what options are available to you.
