Interstate 80 Fatal Crash

Interstate 80 Fatal Crash

I’m Ed Smith, a Loomis Personal Injury Attorney. A man from Penryn passed away when he lost control of his vehicle and struck a truck and trailer that was parked on Interstate 80 on Tuesday, July 19, 2016.

What Happened?

The collision occurred at approximately 3:30 pm. Seventy-year-old Phillip Gordon, who was behind the wheel of his red 1994 Toyota truck, was driving westbound towards the exit for Highway 193. For unknown reasons, Gordon swerved his vehicle to the right which led his vehicle off of the roadway and heading onto the right shoulder.

Interstate 80 Crash Aftermath

Gordon’s vehicle sustained front-end damage and left rear-end damage as a result of the crash. According to officials, the parked International truck and trailer were out of service so they were parked on the shoulder of the highway for this reason.  Sadly, Gordon passed away after suffering fatal injuries due to the force of the front-end collision. Gordon was the only occupant of his vehicle.

California Highway Patrol Investigation Efforts

According to preliminary results of the crash investigation of the California Highway Patrol, Gordon was not restrained by a seat belt during the time of the collision. The third lane of the westbound Highway 80 roadway was shut down for about 45 minutes to allow authorities to work at the accident scene. Authorities stated that alcohol and drugs were not determined to be factors of the collision. The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the California Highway Patrol for the Auburn area. It usually takes a week or two for the CHP to prepare a report of their findings. Sometimes a report may be inconclusive or in error. This may leave the family of the deceased with many lingering questions as to the exact nature of thier loved one’s untimely passing. It is crucial to have an experienced auto accident attorney working with the family to investigate the cause of the collision. An experienced attorney will conduct a thorough investigation of the crash scene, deal with the insurance company, collect and preserve evidence, request trucking company records and other pertinent data to pinpoint liability (fault), interview witnesses and also take necessary steps to protect the rights of those who have passed away in a crash.
