Intersection Collision Claims Life of Wheelchair-Bound Man

Intersection Collision Claims Life of Wheelchair-Bound Man

A South Sacramento major intersection collision claimed the life of a disabled pedestrian on May 31. The accident, which involved a man in a wheelchair and dark gray BMW convertible, occurred at Center Parkway and Mack Road at about 3:30 in the morning. The driver was traveling west along Mack Road when the accident happened. The pedestrian was inside the crosswalk, and it is a designated crossing area. According to a representative of the Sacramento Police Department, the pedestrian was declared dead at the scene of the South Sacramento accident. I would like to extend my prayers and sympathy to the deceased man’s family in their time of sorrow and loss.

Further Details of the Crash

The accident is under investigation by local police as to the cause of the intersection collision. However, it is not believed that alcohol, speed, or drugs contributed to the crash. The individual in the vehicle that struck the pedestrian was the same person who called the police to report the accident. The intersection at Mack Road and Center Parkway was closed until around 8:30 in the morning as the investigation continued. While this area was closed to traffic, motorists were advised to find an alternate route. The name of the deceased man has not been released. The coroner’s office will be releasing the name when family members have been notified of the death.

Visibility Is a Problem for Pedestrians in Wheelchairs

Those in wheelchairs are among the most vulnerable of pedestrians. This is because they have no protection in a collision, have a much lower profile, and are slow-moving. This increases their risk of being struck by a motor vehicle, especially after dark. Following are some ways in which a wheelchair-bound pedestrian can reduce their risk of an intersection collision:

  • Try to run errands during the daylight hours. It is more difficult for a motorist to spot any pedestrian after dark.
  • If you must go out after dark, wear light-colored clothing. Many pedestrians make the mistake of wearing dark clothing. This makes them less visible to motorists and can result in serious injuries.
  • Try to stay out of traffic. Using designated crosswalks and sidewalks is much safer.
  • Consider wearing a helmet, and one that has a light on it. This will help protect you from traumatic brain injury in an accident and allows motorists to spot you.
  • Reflective devices are available for wheelchair users and can help a lot. Reflectors are available that attach to the spokes of the wheels. Reflective vests are sold, and even adding fluorescent tape could help. Safety flags are a good idea for both day and nighttime outings. These are available at local bike shops.

How a Personal Injury Lawyer Can Help

A personal injury lawyer can negotiate with the insurance company on your behalf. It has been proven that using the services of a lawyer results in a higher rate of compensation. The lawyer can also build a strong case to present in civil court. Although nothing will help with the grief a family feels after losing a loved one, recovering financial compensation can help with expenses.
