Pedestrians and Accident Injuries

Pedestrian collisions caused by motor vehicles result in serious injuries and fatalities. The extent of injury is often related to the speed of the vehicle, its size and height, and the pedestrian’s age and height. Older people and children often suffer serious trauma. According to the American Automobile Association Foundation, 10 percent of all pedestrians struck by a motor vehicle traveling at 16 mph will suffer a serious injury. The risk of serious injury increases with the speed of the vehicle that strikes them. By the time a vehicle is moving at 58 mph, the pedestrian has a 90-percent chance of dying.

Injuries Commonly Suffered in a Pedestrian/Motor Vehicle Accident

Following are some of the most common injuries caused by a collision involving a hit-and-run driver and a pedestrian. The extent of injuries often depends on other factors involved. Injuries may include:

  • Bone fractures: In a study of broken bones in pedestrians caused by motor vehicle accidents, fractures of the shinbone, pelvis, and femur represented the most common types. Most were caused by the direct blow of the vehicle against the pedestrian.
  • Lacerations: Some lacerations can be deep or affect the pedestrian’s appearance, requiring stitches or plastic surgery to repair.
  • Traumatic head injuries: Whether the person on foot is struck in the head directly by the vehicle or thrown into the air, TBIs are often serious conditions and can cause permanent damage.
  • Spinal cord damage: Injuries to the spinal cord can be among the most serious. They can range from pain and difficulty in movement to partial or complete paralysis.
  • Abdominal trauma: Internal bleeding or damage to an organ can be life-threatening, requiring emergency treatment and surgery to repair.
