Ongoing Roadwork on Highway 99 Raises Driver Concerns
A recent five-car collision that paused traffic in Merced was the newest mishap in Highway 99’s southbound tunnel lane. This lane, established by Caltrans for construction in May, uses K-rail barricades to reroute traffic during the road’s rehabilitation.
The goal is to elevate the safety standard of Highway 99, with its completion anticipated in the upcoming months. However, safety remains a concern for drivers until then. Drivers shared their concerns about navigating the tunnel lane. Driving through, they worried about colliding with the wall and being blinded by oncoming headlights, especially for those unfamiliar with the area.
Residents say Caltrans should reevaluate the traffic layout, especially considering multiple accidents. Shortly after its introduction, a truck loaded with liquid fertilizer overturned in the tunnel lane, causing a prolonged shutdown. A few days later, a big rig loaded with goods collided near the lane’s start as the driver couldn’t decelerate in time. A tragic incident occurred on July 20 when a detached axle from a northbound big rig struck and killed a female pickup driver. Drivers emphasized the urgency for change, mentioning the need to revisit the design and accelerate the project.
In response, Caltrans issued a statement highlighting the temporary nature of the inconvenience and encouraged drivers to follow speed limits and safety signs. Caltrans aims to complete the project by the spring of 2024.
