Highway 70 Fatality Accident Near Oroville

Four Members of  the Same Family Killed in Car Accident

A fatal collision occurred on Thursday, February 2, 2017, shortly after 7:00 p.m. near Lower Honcut and East Gridley roads just south of Oroville.

What Happened?

According to reports from the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a Honda Civic carrying four passengers was traveling southbound on Highway 70 when the vehicle suddenly lost traction and slid sideways directly into the path of a Ford Mustang that was traveling northbound on the same highway.

The occupants of the mustang, described by CHP personnel as a husband and wife from Oroville, both suffered traumatic injuries as a result of the crash. One was transported by paramedics to the hospital while the other was airlifted to Enloe Medical Center in Chico. All four passengers in the Honda Civic were members of the same family from the community of Olivehurst. Sadly, they all suffered fatal injuries in the accident.

Roadway Closures

Highway 70 was closed for approximately 8 hours on Thursday night between Lower Honcut Road and East Gridley Road while CHP and a special accident investigation team from Sacramento collected evidence and investigated the scene.

Ongoing Investigation

CHP does not believe distracted driving or driving under the influence are factors in this tragic collision. A preliminary report from CHP indicated that at the time of the collision it was raining and the roadways were very wet. No accident cause has been released yet. It generally takes a week or two for the investigating entity to issue a traffic collision report. The report usually indicates a cause for the crash. Sometimes traffic collision reports are inconclusive or in error as to the cause of a crash. This can leave the family members of those who passed away with many unanswered questions. Therefore, it is crucial to contact an experienced car accident lawyer who can thoroughly investigate the events leading up to the accident and properly determine the cause in order to recover compensation for damages and other losses. Contact an attorney for more information.

Officials from the Oroville California Highway Patrol office are asking witnesses to the collision to call them at (530) 538-2700 with any information they may have.

We extend our condolences to the family and friends of those who lost their lives in this tragic auto accident.
