Highway 59 Truck Accident Near Snelling Injures CHP Officer

A Highway 59 truck accident near Snelling injures CHP officer seriously on Wednesday morning after his patrol vehicle was struck by a tractor-trailer on State Route 59 near Snelling.

The Highway 59 truck accident occurred at approximately 7:23 a.m. on August 5, just north of Turlock Road in a rural region north of Merced.

According to the California Highway Patrol’s preliminary investigation, the officer was driving southbound in a CHP patrol pickup and slowed to make a U-turn. As the CHP vehicle entered the northbound lanes of Highway 59, it was struck on the passenger side by a northbound tractor-trailer.

The collision forced the patrol vehicle off the roadway and trapped the officer inside. The emergency crew used rescue equipment to free him from the damaged vehicle before he was airlifted to a Modesto-area hospital with major injuries.

Fortunately, the officer’s injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

The officer’s name has not been released. CHP reported that he has served with the department for more than 24 years.

The tractor-trailer driver was not injured and remained at the scene. Investigators said alcohol and drugs are not suspected to have contributed to the collision.

Northbound Highway 59 was shut down at Turlock Road as personnel treated the officer, investigated the collision, and removed hazards from the roadway.
