Highway 50 Fatal Crash

A father and his family were traveling in his BMW during the midnight hour of Wednesday, December 28, 2016. During this travel, the father lost control of his vehicle causing him and his family to drive off the road.

What Happened?

A father was behind the wheel of his BMW traveling along Highway 50 in El Dorado County. As the 33-year-old father was conducting a turning movement, he attempted to apply his breaks but this resulted in a catastrophe. The steering wheel of the BMW locked resulting in the vehicle veering off the roadway, becoming airborne and going down a rocky embankment. The BMW struck several large rocks moments before overturning several times and coming to a rest on its roof.

What Caused the Crash?

The cause of the crash has not been determined by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) at this moment. The speed limit of the highway was dropped from 55 to 45 miles per hours as a safety precaution for motorists traveling along this stretch of the roadway. According to Dedra Hammonds, a store clerk at a local store, stated that black ice is an issue for this portion of the highway. CHP do not suspect black ice as a factor in this crash. However, a lack of a guardrail may have been a factor in this tragic crash.

Witnesses Assist Injured Occupants

Three good Samaritans that witnessed the automobile accident immediately stopped to assist the injured motorist and his son get out of the BMW. Two of the good Samaritans happened to be off-duty Caltrans employees. The witnesses and occupants were suffering from hypothermia until emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene. The California Highway Patrol stated that if the witnesses did not stop to assist the injured occupants, they may have not survived.

Occupants Suffer Injuries

The driver suffered from a broken back injury and was transported to the hospital to be treated for major injuries. The 13-year-old daughter of the driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash which caused her to be ejected out of the vehicle and hit several rocks. A 23-year-old woman did not require assistance and was able to exit the cabin of the vehicle on her own. The 13-year-old daughter and the 23-year-old woman suffered from minor injuries and were also transported to the hospital for treatment. Sadly, the 11-year-old son of the driver was not able to survive through the accident due to the grave condition of his injuries.

We extend our condolences to the loved ones of this young boy that passed away in this tragic crash.
